Navigating the Weather

Weather affects all pesticide applications. Learn about resources on the Kansas Mesonet website to determine wind speed, temperature, inversions and other factors. In addition, you will learn from real-life examples on how to spot a temperature inversion and what that may mean for herbicide applications. Finally, there are all types of weather apps. Learn how to spot reliable ones for current weather conditions and radar.
Water Quality, Spray Mixtures and Weed Control

Water quality can affect herbicide efficacy and it is not a topic that many farmers or applicators know a great deal about. In this session, you will learn how to test your water and of a water testing opportunity. In addition, water conditioners and surfactants are often added to tank mixes and can help combat water quality issues. You will learn which herbicides these can be most effective with.
Is it Viral? Wheat Diseases to Watch for Next Spring

The wheat mosaic complex was a significant problem in wheat last year. This complex includes, Wheat Streak Mosaic, Triticum Mosaic and High Plains Mosaic. These mosaic viruses are moved from volunteer wheat and other grassy hosts to the wheat crop. In this session, you will learn to identify the symptoms and how to submit a wheat sample for testing. You will also hear about research on controlling volunteer wheat with herbicides, results from a recent survey of volunteer wheat in northwest Kansas, and best management practices for combatting wheat mosaic viruses.
Herbicides and Dry Environments and Herbicide Label Updates

Dry conditions can cause challenges with herbicide efficacy. Specifically, preemergence herbicides with residual control often need moisture to activate in the soil. A lack of humidity can also cause challenges with postemergence herbicides. You will learn about both of these situations and how to navigate them. In addition, you will learn about any recent label updates.
Making Pest Management Decisions

The Pest Friends game is a board game designed to walk attendees through an insect infestation and determine how to manage it. It includes scouting fields, reading Extension materials about the new pest, insecticide control, beneficial insects to help suppress the detrimental pests and more. Whoever has the most money (and hopefully the least crop damage) at the end...wins! This game was designed by Extension Educators at the University of Idaho.

The Label Game

How often do you open up a herbicide label? Can you find specific information like growth stage of application and weeds controlled? In this session, we are going to work through 8 to 12 common herbicide labels to determine herbicide group, growth stage requirements, tank mix partners and many other items you may need to know for herbicide applications! We will work in teams and there will be candy for correct answers!
Kansas Regulation (Core Hour)
