Navigating the Weather
by: Chip Redmond, K-State Meterologist and Weather Data Library/Mesonet Manager
Weather affects all pesticide applications. Learn about resources on the Kansas Mesonet website to determine wind speed, temperature, inversions and other factors. In addition, you will learn from real-life examples on how to spot a temperature inversion and what that may mean for herbicide applications. Finally, there are all types of weather apps. Learn how to spot reliable ones for current weather conditions and radar.
Drone Applications and Weed Detection

In this session, Dr. Deepak Joshi will give an overview of his research with drone herbicide applications and his work with weed detection. This will include work in both row crop fields and in pastures. For the drone applications, he will discuss droplet distribution in the application area under the drone.
Weed Control Research Update for Western Kansas

This session will include research results from western Kansas on troublesome weeds, like Palmer amaranth and kochia. This will also include results for preemergence and postemergence applications in corn, sorghum, wheat and fallow. Some of these research results will be from multiple locations and will include new herbicide active ingredients or looking at active ingredients on different crops.
Glufosinate Applications in Dry Environments

The use of glufosinate (Liberty products) is increasing in western Kansas because of the development of herbicide resistant. The challenge is that the efficacy of glufosinate applications is dependent on the environment. We will discuss which conditions are more conducive to good weed control and when those conditions occur.
Making Pest Management Decisions

This session will focus on six troublesome weeds – Palmer amaranth, tumble windmillgrass, velvetleaf, cocklebur, bindweed and the foxtail spp. Properly identifying each species will be discussed. The ecology of each weed species will be addressed, with emphasis placed on herbicide application timing for increased control.
Fall Armyworms, Grasshoppers and Other Pests to Scout For

This session will focus on insects that were challenging during the 2026 growing season and what insects have the potential to be a challenge during the upcoming growing season. Duriong this session, Anthony will discuss the insect trapping network, how to participate in that network and how the results from the trapping helps predict infestations. These insects will include grasshoppers, western bean cutworms, army worms and armyworm cutworms.
The Label Game

How often do you open up a herbicide label? Can you find specific information like growth stage of application and weeds controlled? In this session, we are going to work through 8 to 12 common herbicide labels to determine herbicide group, growth stage requirements, tank mix partners and many other items you may need to know for herbicide applications! We will work in teams and there may be candy for correct answers!
Kansas Regulation (Core Hour)

This session will be an update to Kansas laws and regulations for pesticides. This will include information for applicators, businesses and dealers and will include time for questions.
